Gastropoda
Characteristics of Gastropods
- Gastropods have a muscular foot that is most often used for moving very slowly. It can also be used to dig or burrow.
- There are over 60,000 documented species of gastropods today, and likely many that are undiscovered.
- Most gastropods have a shell that is made of a type of calcium called calcium carbonate.
- Gastropods can be found in a variety of habitats all around the world. Some gastropods are marine, or live in the water, while others are terrestrial, or live on land.
- Some snails and slugs have eyes on the ends of rods that extend from the head.
