- Most often bivalves have two symmetric shell halves.
- Bivalves have a muscular foot that can be used for various reasons, including digging.
- Bivalves do not have brains.
- The mantle is the exterior part of the bivalve that excretes the calcium needed to form the shell(s).
- If two shells are present they are held together at one end by the ligament.

Examples of bivalves include oysters, mussels and clams.
